NEW RELEASES for Late Summer Sipping

These selections from our favorites – both old and new – are sure to make those last summer moments divine.

YOUNG HAGEN produces very small quantities of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from esteemed vineyard sites at elevation.  The winemaking is extremely natural allowing the great vineyards to shine through.

Winemaker Tim Beranek began his winemaking career at Kosta Browne in 2010.  The next year, he took his second internship with Thomas Rivers Brown at Outpost Winery.  From cellar master to assistant winemaker and now winemaker at Mending Wall wines, he oversees all winemaking production for the other 25+ high-end projects of Brown’s that are crafted there.

Young Hagen is Tim and wife Ali’s personal project.

2016 Platt Vineyard CHARDONNAY
Special Price $59.95
Long-time customers will recognize Platt Vineyard from the other stellar bottlings (Purlieu, Ramey, Littorai).  Known as being “near perfect” and maybe “the greatest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyard in California”, it takes a special relationship to source grapes from this site.  When the opportunity arose to work with this special site, Tim couldn’t say yes fast enough.  From the smallest block of Wente Chardonnay clone on the western-most hillside of the vineyard, the clusters from 2016 were tiny, ripe and loaded with bright acidity, translating to a wine with concentration, depth, incredible length and laser focus.  With this level of acidity, the wine will be long lived only become more complex.  Only 110 cases produced.

2016 Riddle Vineyard PINOT NOIR
Special Price $44.95
The third vintage from Riddle Vineyard opens with raspberry, sandalwood and dark cherry on the nose.  Lavender, rose and black tea on the palate lead to a minute+ finish.
Drawing on a shared ethos of entrepreneurship and relentless perfectionism, the Realm team will never be satisfied with the status quo. Every success – and every failure – is an opportunity to learn, adapt and evolve. With grit and determination, we strive to create a legacy greater than any one individual, one that will last for generations.  This cult winery has crafted yet another highly sought after Sauvignon Blanc, one that celebrates the art and precision required of meticulous blending, combining grapes from impeccable growing sites with the judicious oversight of the human hand and palate.

2019 Coombsville WHITE WINE
Special Price $59.95  (A select few retailers lucky enough to stock this wine have it listed for up to $99!)
The Farella Vineyard has all these layers of volcanic tufa, decomposed rocks and ashy deposits – perfect for Cabernet, and as it turns out, Sauvignon Blanc. Farella has a few rows of SB on a slope in the northwest corner of the site, and after bugging Tom Farella for three years, Realm was finally able to secure the fruit in 2009. These grapes form the backbone of Fidelio (formerly known as Ibid), to which small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc from other sites are added for additional complexity. Fidelio is a version of a fine white Bordeaux: expansive on the palate, wonderfully complex, a beautifully structured and concentrated white.
Special Price $44.95
HEINTZ VINEYARD & WINERY is owned and operated by the Heintz family since 1912.  The 50 acre coastal vineyard is located in the cool climate of the Sonoma Coast/Russian River Valley/Green Valley (Sonoma County) growing region.  Heintz Vineyard is world renowned for producing exceptional quality fruit  grown by 3rd generation farmer Charles Heintz and the ines are truly hand-crafted from grower to winemaker and represent the best of what the vineyard has to offer.  The wines reveal a true sense of place in the lively aromatics, firm structure and complex character of the fruit that is unique to the vineyard.
2015 Sonoma Coast Searby CHARDONNAY
Special Price $48.95
Bright lemon-gold in appearance, this wine is aroma and acid driven.  Intense stone fruit and tropical fruit aroma are prominent; followed by subtle ripe apple, orange blossom, white flower stoniness.  The aromatics continue on the palate with complex notes of pastry and candied citrus.  Acidity is brisk and racy, with a refreshing juiciness.  A good match with boldly flavored international cuisines, this wine will show beautifully through 2023.
2015 Sonoma Coast Valentina PINOT NOIR
Special Price $49.95
Shows exotic floral aromas with nuances of mixed red fruits including dark cherry, raspberry and pomegranate.  Hints of subtle baking spice notes with graphite and earthy nuances underneath the fruit.  The palate starts out delicate but broadens out for a clean precise finish.  It is a delicate and elegant Pinot Noir expression with depth, drinkability, and staying power in the glass.  The oak is well integrated in support of the silky, seamless balance of the four clones.  The wine will continue to improve over 5 years or more in the bottle.

When you hear the words “Hollywood and Vine,” the famous intersection in Los Angeles might come to mind, but for us, the name represents the partnership between friends and a mutual love of wine.  Actor turned director and screenwriter, Doug Barr, relocated to the Napa Valley from Hollywood, in the early 1990’s. Inspired to try his hand at the wine business, Doug called his longtime pal, Bruce Orosz, and together, they created Hollywood and Vine Cellars. Recruiting one of the most talented winemakers in the valley, Celia Welch, H & V released its first vintage in 1998 to glowing reviews.
2015 ‘2480’ Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Special Price $99.95
While late Spring showers limited the quantity of wine grapes produced in this vintage, the quality was unsurpassed in most areas of Napa Valley, and the wine shows every lovely nuance of the vintage. Harvested entirely by hand between September 27 and October 10, the vineyards used in this Cabernet combine the plush, grace and complexity of Rutherford and the bright natural acidity of Oakville bench locations.
From Winemaker Celia Welch, “Dark, jammy notes of cranberry, plum and cherry combine with subtle hints of cedar, smoke and mocha in this exceedingly complex Cabernet.  On the palate, the wine is round and satiny at entry with bright cherry flavors and the vibrancy of fresh plums.  Darker notes of tobacco, spice and mocha build in the finish.”

…we have the Chardonnay for you!
For the white wine aficionado that can appreciate a bright Chablis-style, the “White Hill” Chardonnay from Liquid Farm will not disappoint.
With a more mineral driven profile, the wine was given its name in honor of the chalky white hills of Chablis and diatomaceous earth of Sta. Rita Hills, where these grapes are sourced.
To be honest, it’s been quite a while since Marcus had the pleasure to tasting such a “racy, lively, spectacular, truly phenomonal” wine.  Its balanced acidity makes it an excellent pairing for your summer favorites, from patio fare to exotic spicy dishes.
Normally available exclusively through the winery’s mailing list, we are proud to offer it to our customers.  And at just $35.95, the price can’t be beat.

A Wine Riddle

Where can you get an acclaimed wine borne from a winery that has consistently earned 100 points from Robert Parker, Jr. over its 100-year history, crafted by one of the most renowned winemakers of our time, and under $60?
This is a one-time opportunity to purchase a premium 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that has been highly acclaimed by a gamut of wine critics. But you must contact us to ensure your purchase from the limited quantity at an unpublishable price!

We’ll give you a little hint…this wine was crafted by a wine industry icon, Philippe Melka.  A native of Bordeaux, Melka grew up intrigued by the intricacies of the land around him. When it came time for college, he acted on his childhood interests, earning a degree in Geology at the University of Bordeaux. A class in winemaking in his final year was a turning point, propelling him to earn a Master’s degree in Agronomy and Enology.

Melka has the rare combination of talent and fortune to be a winemaker who started at the top: his first job out of school was at Château Haut Brion. From there, he took a position with the reputable Moueix Company and was sent to Dominus Estate in Yountville to study soils in 1991. Napa Valley soil proved to be a revelation for Melka. He set out traveling, dividing time between soil study and winemaking at world renowned wineries Badio O Coltibuono in Chianti and Chittering Estate in Australia. He returned to France in 1993 to deepen his expertise at Chateau Petrus.

He has been fortunate to have been trained and influenced by some of the most notable personalities in the wine business such as Jean Delmas and Jean Philippe Masclef from Haut-Brion, Christian Moueix and Jean Claude Berrouet from Petrus, Paul Draper from Ridge, Daniel Baron from Silver Oak and the globetrotting wine consultant Michel Rolland with whom he continues to work with on consulting projects..

In 1994, he returned to Napa full time, and for the past 20 years, Melka has served as winemaking consultant for some of Napa’s most highly regarded properties.

Any guesses yet?

Silver Ghost founder Weston Eidson’s great-grandfather, John Montagu, was a pioneer in the emerging automobile industry at the turn of the 20th century. As a British Lord and Member of Parliament, he was an instrumental figure in early automotive legislation. Montagu had a close relationship with Charles Rolls and Henry Royce and suggested that his secretary serve as the model for the Rolls-Royce hood ornament, the Spirit of Ecstasy, which we still see on Rolls-Royce cars to this day. As a tribute to his family’s illustrious past, Weston adopted the name of his great-grandfather’s favorite car – the 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.
Made from some of the most prestigious vineyards in Napa Valley including Beckstoffer’s George’s III, black and red fruits with layers of mocha and a SILKY tannin finish. This is one of the BEST red wine deals from NAPA VALLEY. Maybe even your new GO-TO!

Winemaker David Green has been lucky enough to work with the likes of icons David Ramey and Philippe Melka, but he doesn’t fear the trap of what good fortune he may have in front of him. The 2018 is Green’s first release of Cabernet Sauvignon. Now working with former Screaming Eagle winemaker Maayan Koschitzky, these wines from Royal Prince are becoming epic.
2018 Sonoma Coast CHARDONNAY

Minimalist winemaking allows the wine to reflect the coolness and fog-filled influence of the extreme Sonoma Coast. It’s crisp and mouthwatering, luring you in with each sip.
2017 Santa Maria PINOT NOIR

The 2017 shows balance and richness with aromas of dried cherries, Dijon mustard, violets and baking spices. It’s garnet in color, viscous and supple, and expresses vibrant flavors of pomegranate and black cherry. The tannins are plush, smooth and balanced by vivid acidity.
Special Price $34.95
A seamless, opulent, densely textured wine that is at once extravagant and racy in its precision, the 2018 is dark and almost opaque in color and shows aromas of truffle, black cherry and licorice. The wine fills the palate with an amazing energy, leading to a deeply textured mouthfeel, and culminating with fine grained tannins and an exceptionally long, lifted finish.

Special Price $49.95 (Where on this planet can you get a TRB for that price?)
How can we showcase wine without one from Thomas Rivers Brown?  The 2017 vintage sold out quickly and the ‘18s’ are even better so I know to secure enough for not only return buyers but new ones as well!
Caterwaul is a new collaboration between superstar winemaker Brown and Matt Hardin from Barbour Vineyard Management. Started in 2014, they produce a Napa Valley Cabernet from Matt’s estate vineyard in Pope Valley and a Regusci Vineyard release from Stags Leap.
The 2018 vintage can be described as a picture-perfect growing season. Starting in February, the vines arose from their winter slumber and as late spring approached, flowering yielded uniform grape clusters. The mild and warm summer gave way to a steady harvest season that afforded the grapes extended hang time. It is very expressive upon first pour; a tantalizing perfume of fresh blackberry and dark cherry jump from the glass with notes of cedar and burnt tobacco rounding out the nose. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied with creme de cassis and dark berry tones giving way to velvety tannins that lead into a bright and refreshing finish.

J GREGORY 2012 “Coombsville” Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Retail price $80, Special Price $34.95
From Opus winemaker Mark Jessup, these same vineyards were used to make the final Opus One wine that sold for $325 a bottle.
J Gregory is inspired by Jonny Gregory Jessup, who was diagnosed at birth with a challenging disability, and honors Jonny’s determination and love of life. The wines reflect Mark’s expressive winemaking style, commitment to quality, and attention to detail. In addition, the stylized design of the label echoes Mark’s respect and love for family; the ‘thumbprint’ image represents his four sons, with special recognition of Jonny.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is from a small vineyard in Coombsville. The complex bouquet is immediately apparent – with layers of aromas including a darker fruit liqueur, dark chocolate, dried rose petals and blueberry. The palate is well balanced with nice acidity – anchored by dusty fine grained tannins. This wine is easy to drink.

LAST CALL…These wines from famed winemaker Paul Hobbs have been our most popular wines to date and these two vintages have received their highest scores and ratings.
2016 Sonoma Coast CHARDONNAY
Retail Price $48, Special Price $29.95
Continues to show the character of the Sonoma Coast vineyards that we started to see in 2012. The color is a pale yellow-green, unfiltered gold color that is neither flat nor brilliant. The coastal nose of this Chardonnay is crisp and clean with characters of bread dough, citrus peel and a beautiful slight tang of Passion Fruit. Aromas of damp pebbles showcase the minerality side of this wine. I would say that at this stage the personality of this wine is linear. One flavor and aroma leads gracefully and softly to the next. There is an equal balance between the fruit and acid that gives the wine a soft nature free of tension. Graceful wisps of mild oak can be found at the edges. The nose and flavors mirror one another with melon leading the way. Lemon peel, apricot, pear and melon are found, along with a medium long, soft, round, finish that gives way to crème brulee and a hint of slightly toasted marshmallow.  This great wine from a great vintage is going fast and we got in the last 15 cases so you know that won’t last around here for long.
Regular Price $60, Special Price $34.95
This showed well from the start and all through two years of barrel aging, but seemed to hit a higher gear right before bottling. I now feel that the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon will be equal to or better than 2012 and 2013. Once again a very dark color. Dark nose as well…dark, thick, black and red cherry with sweet mixed berries, currants and plum…none of these fruits dominates the other; it’s just a delightful mix of complexity.

MERRY EDWARDS Now Available to Select Retailers…including us!

2018 Russian River SAUVIGNON BLANC
Very few Sauvignon Blancs have the complex array of aromatics and unique flavors offered up by this stellar super-SAUV.  Scents of salted butterscotch, peach blossom, just-mowed grass and pineapple fill the air. Developed flavors of jasmine-soaked pears and honeyed tangerine are mesmerizing – and the acidity pulls it all together.
Russian River
Warmly opulent and sophisticated, this is an intense, inviting Pinot. It’s packed with ripe cherry, strawberry fruit leather, brambleberry and blueberry. This fruit expression is heightened by anise, earthy notes, well-integrated toasty oak, and a whisper of violets and white flower blossoms.
Sonoma Coast
The exotic aroma shows off spicy notes of cardamom, tamarind, allspice and cinnamon and expands into mouthwatering candied red cherries and berry fruits — red raspberries, wild strawberries, ripe boysenberries and juicy blackberries. Cocoa nibs, cola, white chocolate, candied violets, crème brûlée, caramel and just a hint of blood orange add layers of complexity.
